Obama to Geithner: Stop AIG Bonus Pay

Monday, March 16th, 2009

President Barack Obama, trying to contain a political firestorm, instructed Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner “pursue every legal avenue” to block $165 million in bonuses to AIG executives who were in part responsible for the company’s near collapse.

“This is a corporation that finds itself in financial distress due to recklessness and greed,” Mr. Obama said ahead of announcing a plan to rescue small businesses through a raft of new lending options. “Under these circumstances, it’s hard to understand how derivative traders at AIG warranted any bonuses, much less $165 million in extra pay. How do they justify this outrage to the taxpayers who are keeping the company afloat?”

Robert Reich on AIG:
“The real scandal of AIG isn’t just that American taxpayers have so far committed $170 billion to the giant insurer because it is thought to be too big to fail

From Media Matters:
The Politico and the AP forwarded the false Republican talking point that President Obama’s proposals to let the Bush tax cuts for wealthy taxpayers expire and reduce the tax rate at which wealthy taxpayers could take itemized deductions would increase taxes on a large percentage of small businesses. Friday, March 13th, 2009

Star-Telegram:
Perry unveiled his decision at a news conference in the middle of Bering’s Hardware store in Houston. Supporters were invited to watch the announcement via a live video stream on his political Web site, RickPerry.org.

“I am here today to stand with Texas employers and the millions of Texans they employ to resist further intrusion into their businesses through an expansion of our state’s unemployment insurance program,” Perry said.

Perry has signaled for weeks that he was uncomfortable with taking parts of the stimulus money that would amount to increasing the state’s social-services net, which the state would have to continue funding once the money ran out.

Democrats denounced the decision as brazen political move that endangers thousands of unemployed Texans. An estimated 250,000 Texans have lost jobs since the recession began.
