When Bush Is History

Tuesday, January 13th, 2009

Eugene Robinson of the Washington Post writes:

“Asked to identify the biggest mistake of his presidency, Bush gave a curious answer that had more to do with public relations than presidential decision making. He mentioned the “Mission Accomplished” banner that prematurely announced the end of major conflict in Iraq — but not his decision to invade Iraq in the first place. He mentioned his failure to visit New Orleans at the height of the devastating, deadly flooding caused by Hurricane Katrina — but not the decision to entrust the Federal Emergency Management Agency to the hapless and ineffective Michael Brown.”

“That there has been no new attack does not justify waterboarding, Guantanamo, secret CIA prisons or warrantless domestic surveillance. Bush believes these departures from American values and traditions were necessary, but from what we know so far, they look more like overkill — an excess of cruelty and a disdain for the rule of law that have seriously damaged this nation’s sense of itself. “

Non-Partisan Group Critics McCain VP Choice:

Friday, August 29th, 2008

The non-partisan group Campaign Money Watch responded that the pick underscores McCain’s loss of maverick reformer credentials:

“In choosing Governor Palin, Senator McCain is clearly trying to shore up his past maverick reformer image – an image that is now in tatters due to the type of campaign he’s run and the big money lobbyists he depends on every day of the week,” Donnelly said.

“This selection raises plenty of questions,” Donnelly continued. “She bills herself as a reformer, but has been silent on whether she supports public financing of elections in her own state. As governor of an oil-producing state, she’s been a friend to Big Oil. Given John McCain’s extensive fundraising from Big Oil, her selection raises concerns of whether the McCain-Palin ticket will promise the same access for oil companies and their lobbyists that we’ve seen for nearly eight years from the Bush-Cheney administration.”

The Right Judgment for President

Friday, August 1st, 2008

Barack Obama has proven that he can step up to a challenge and has the judgment to make the right call even when it’s not the easy one.

As a community organizer, Obama developed strategies to empower ordinary citizens to improve their communities.  Realizing he could do more to help if he had a law degree, he attended Harvard, the top law school in the country.  He did so well that he became president of the Harvard Law Review.

Listen to the people he worked with and you soon realize that he is an extremely intelligent, tireless worker.  As an Illinois state legislator and U.S. Senator, he impressed his fellow legislators, both democrat and republican, with his intelligence and work ethic.

As a candidate for the democratic nomination, he proved to be the best campaigner by defeating the Clinton political machine which basically built most of the current Democratic Party.  His command of issues like the economy, healthcare, energy independence, and foreign policy (the Bush Administration is moving to Obama’s position Iran, Iraq and Afghanistan), have frustrated the McCain campaign to the point that they have resorted to character attacks on Obama (and it’s only July!).

Historically, if you analyze the position of president, judgment and the ability to handle unforeseen challenges are the essential characteristics a candidate for president needs.  George W. Bush as well as many other presidents has said as much.

What many have realized is that Barack Obama’s steady temperament (no-shock Barack) and decision-making abilities make him the ideal candidate for president.
