From Courier-Journal:
Sen. Jim Bunning all but declared war this morning on his own party’s Senate campaign committee chairman and threatened to sue the GOP if committee officials recruited an opponent to run against him in Kentucky’s 2010 Republican primary.

The Kentucky Republican, who has said he is running for re-election next year, made his comments in a conference call with reporters this morning.

Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas, the chairman of the National Republican Senatorial Committee, confirmed to The Washington Post Monday that Kentucky Senate President David Williams had met with officials at the committee last week. Cornyn called it “a courtesy visit.”

“Just to clear up any potential confusion, the NRSC supports Sen. Bunning,” Cornyn said.

Asked if he was happy with Cornyn’s comments, Bunning said today: “I don’t believe anything John Cornyn says. I’ve had miscommunications with John Cornyn from, I guess, the first week of this current session of the Senate. He either doesn’t understand English or he doesn’t understand direct: ‘I’m going to run,’ which I said to him in the cloakroom of our chamber.”

During a speech Thursday at a Republican event, Todd Rokita said 90 percent of blacks vote for Democrats.

In a follow-up interview with WHAM-TV in Rochester, N.Y., on Wednesday, Kuhl repeated assertions he originally made in early August. The comments cropped up again this week when his opponent’s campaign briefly posted them to YouTube.

“It’s very frustrating when you see a Democratic majority stay away, as they did intentionally, from addressing the issue of lowering the price of gasoline by adopting a comprehensive energy plan,” Kuhl said. “It leads one to believe that, in fact, this is done for an intentional purpose. I still believe that. I hope I’m wrong.”

I’m not saying that given the choice I wouldn’t pick a robust economy and a worry-free global outlook. But circumstances being what they are, I have to say that as the White House campaign hits its final stride under the ominous shadow of the Wall Street meltdown and the deep recession that’s hurtling this way, perhaps the only silver lining — the one unexpected pleasure — has been watching the Drudge Report be completely neutered by current events.

Matt Drudge is still doing his loyal best to boost the chances of the GOP down the homestretch in the form of a blizzard of anti-Obama and pro-McCain links on his site. (Last week, it was the half-baked McCain “comeback” that Drudge hyped relentlessly.)

And there’s no question that Drudge’s Web traffic remains strong and continues to grow, thanks to a burgeoning international audience. But in terms of setting the ground rules — in terms of setting the campaign agenda — Drudge has been AWOL since mid-September when the credit crisis erupted.
